E-investments of APPM in 2021 amounted to about 600 million rubles

The issues of permanent development have been integrated into the development strategy of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, JSC for more than 20 years. The plant is systematically modernizing production having built by now an integrated green transformation management system that is developing regardless of changing trends on the international agenda.

At the end of the year 2021 the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, JSC maintained long-term dynamics of reducing the negative impact on the environment. As a result of the production modernization a clear decoupling effect is recorded confirming a decrease in the burden on the environment with an increase in production productivity.

The plant’s costs for the implementation of environmental protection measures, the introduction of the best available technologies (BAT), the implementation of the activities of The Program for improving environmental efficiency in the past year amounted to 594.9 million rubles.

The company continued carrying out measures for the production technical reequipment, pilot testing aimed at introducing environmentally efficient technological solutions. Several environment friendly projects were completed, including the local wastewater treatment of the wood-exchange production.

The implemented integrated solutions, in addition to the greening of production, also have additional multiplicative effects.

With production productivity increase from the year 2016 to the year 2022 by an average of 11% the plant reduced the fresh (river)water intake from the water body by 5%, the specific discharge of pollutants into the water body by 15%, and the specific emissions of pollutants into the atmospheric air – by 30%, specific placement (burial) of waste – by more than 10%.

According to the accounting data in 2021, by the year 2020 waste generation decreased by 2.6%, the amount of waste to be disposed (buried) on the waste disposal sites of the enterprise – by 2.8%, the amount of recovered and neutralized wastes – by 28%.

Last year, the main ongoing activities of the technical re-equipment program in terms of reducing the negative impact on the environment and rational nature management were: start of the transfer of the plant from coal to natural gas; technical reequipment of gas cleaning systems and dirty condensate cleaning systems VVU-3 and VVU-4, gas purification systems of the pulp production pulping area; bleaching waste water cooling, use of secondary heat for heating filtrates for washing showers of vacuum filters with reuse of filtrates and reconstruction of sections of the slag and ash dump. According to the results of last year the total gross emission of pollutants into the atmosphere in relation to similar figure of last year decreased by 13%.

The Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill is adapting its environmental policy to ongoing socio -economic programs. As a result of the new evaporation station start up at cardboard production (with decommissioning of the old evaporation station) the reduction in methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulphide emissions in general at APPM was about 27% and 54% respectively compared to the year 2020.

Despite the fact that the plant's emissions correspond to the level of BAT, the plant is systematically moving towards one of the main tasks - to reduce emissions of sulfur-containing compounds into the atmosphere, which cause the greatest concern to residents of the nearest settlements of the Arkhangelsk region.
