The general raw materials supplier to APPM will build a new forest nursery in Pinezhsky district

01 apr 2022

The Partner and general supplier of raw materials to the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill, The Titan Group of Companies, announced the construction of one more greenhouse facility. The growing of ball-rooted seedlings (Root-Balled Tree System) for the holding’s reforestation needs will be started in Pinezhsky district in the nearest future.

Since 2014 the Titan Group of Companies has been growing coniferous seedlings in 11 greenhouses situated in Nyandoma district of the Arkhangelsk region.

Annually the holding invests more than 100 million rubles in reforestation.

Last year the company reproduced the forest on an area of 21.5 thousands hectares which is 15% more than it had originally been planned. More than 3 million trees were planted on forest lands.

The priority aim of the Titan Group of Companies is the increasing of the volumes of artificial reforestation using ball-rooted seedlings. In addition to reforestation activities the holding’s enterprises are occupied with taking care of the past plantations. In 2021, agrotechnical and forestry care for coniferous crops was carried out on an area of 2.6 thousand hectares, cleaning and liberation cutting and in young forests was completed on 3 thousand hectares of the forest areas.

The annual increase in cleaning cutting volumes is the result of systematic work on the transition to an intensive forest management model. The holding emphasizes that it is an important stage of responsible and efficient forest management. In the conditions of natural reforestation dominance, cleaning cutting is the only optimal option for the formation of target tree species forest plantations from young stands of natural origin. As experts emphasize, on artificially restored forest areas the lack of care leads to the death of more than half of the pine and spruce seedlings.

Nowadays the holding is one of the leaders in voluntary forest certification in Russia. The area of the forests certified by FSC (FSC License Code: FSC-C016977®) is over 5 million hectares.

Despite the fact that since April, 8 FSC International has suspended all trade certificates in Russia and Belarus, the Titan Group of Companies emphasizes that they separate politics from responsible forest management, so the holding will continue to conduct business in strict accordance with international environmental standards: rationally using natural resources, with concern for the conservation of biodiversity and forests of high conservation value, and, of course, reforestation with the most modern methods.

The Titan Group of companies is one of the five largest timber operators in Russia. The area of forests leased by the holding is 6 million hectares, which are located not only in the Arkhangelsk region, but also in the Vologda region and Komi Republic.

Currently, the company annually supplies about 4 million m³ of timber to the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill.

As part of the built vertically integrated structure, forest plots leased by Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill and Titan Group amount to 5.3 million m³ of allowable cut.
