APPM forms a new structure of sustainable development concept in the light of E-factor

With the view of further activity development in the sphere of ecological and social responsibility, management system and, in general, business sustainable development, an anchor enterprise Pulp Mill Holding (Austria) on the territory of Russia, Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC confirmed structural changes, providing building up of an entity, coordinating the issues related to the achievement of goals of enterprise sustainable development. The activity of the new entity will allow focusing on the achievements of relevant goals in the sphere of sustainable development (SDG, UN Sustainable Development Goals).

Earlier the Department of the United Nations Organization has already included Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC into the list of the best practices of the achievement of sustainable development goals (https://sdgs.un.org/partnerships/low-carbon-development-strategy-arkhangelsk-pulp-paper-mill).

Investment Director of Pulp Mill Holding Vladimir Krupchak points out that Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC is an example of investment and personnel injections into the company, efficiently contributing to transition to low carbon-intensive economy of Arctic Regions. At the moment APPM is a national leader of world-wide climatic rating CDP (The Carbon Disclosure Project - international project on the disclosure concerning greenhouse gas emissions). On the basis of the result of the reporting campaign CDP over 2019 Arkhangelsk PPM, JSC got the highest rating "A" among Russian companies. At the same time, the mill was included into top-18 leading worldwide pulp and paper companies with climatic rating "A".

Vladimir Krupchak noted that today the level of company's success is defined not only by profitб but by complying with ESG standards as well; i.e. social commitments, ecological initiatives, sustainable development principles are considered as priority components for business by the society (in September 2021 independent Credit Rating Agency RAEX-Europe included again Arkhangelsk PPM into the updated integrated ESG-ranking (https://www.raexpert.eu/esg_corporate_ranking/, 62 place out of 145 top-companies of Russian economy).

Nowadays the mill is in the process of development of its own Policy in ESG sphere and sustainable development taking into account anticipations of core groups of stakeholders (governmental authorities, investors, clients, personnel, inhabitants of footprint territories, civil societies). "We follow regulations of Russian legislation and regulatory requirements, take into consideration the position of Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources as related to ESG-agenda" - assured top-manager of Pulp Mill Holding.

According to Vladimir Krupchak, SDG architecture has been already practically created at APPM.

During the current year the mill was one of the first in the country to get Complex ecological permit (CEP), thus it actually created enterprise system ESG-CEP. Namely, CEP in the light of E-factor.

At the mill the strategy of low-carbon development was approved for the period up to 2030, according to which the company undertakes voluntary commitment to reduce general direct and energetic indirect emissions of greenhouse gases by 55% in comparison with 1990 up to 1.4 mln tons of CO2-equiv. per year. It is necessary to reduce the other indirect emissions in 2030 by 20% in comparison with 2015 up to 370000 tons of CO2-equiv. per year. The strategy is based upon the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions since 1990.

In the coming year the mill is going to complete the implementation of energy management system and confirm its correspondence to standard ISO 50001, thus struggling for the growth of energy efficiency, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and reduction of energy demands.

Since 2006 APPM supports a voluntary forest certification according to standards FSC (code of trademark license FSC — FSC-С002853). It considers that observation of FSC principles assists to manage forests in a responsible way, conserve biodiversity, maintain financial well-being, right and interests of inhabitants of forest harvesting areas. 

Along with the growth of volumes and modernization of production the management of the mill regularly implemented social policy in line with ecological policy, and up to ESG-agenda activation. Commitment to ESG principles calls for "broadening of the existing boundaries" at the earliest possible time and complete some of issues of management philosophy.
