The employees of the APPM planted a garden on Melnikov Street in Novodvinsk

88 spruce tree seedlings and 88 ash tree seedlings were planted by the families of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill employees and residents of the town on the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow within the “Garden of Remembrance” campaign.

“In our family, as in any other, there are relatives who participated in the war. We have a whole labor dynasty – we all work at the mill. And it is pleasure to know that on the way to work there will be a beautiful garden where the tree planted by our family grows”, says Svetlana Shmakova.

The seedlings of spruce trees and ash trees were purchased by the APPM. Under each tree there is a plate indicating the surname of the family that planted the trees. The tree planting was the beginning of a joint project of the APPM and the city authorities of Novodvinsk concerning the improvement of Melnikov Street.

“Until recently, old poplars grew here. We have prepared the site and planted a new garden today. In summer we are planning to repair the sidewalk along the road, and then replace the old lamp posts. Soon there will be new lighting, both over the roadway and over the sidewalk”, said Dmitry Zylev, General Director of the APPM, who took part in the “Garden of Remembrance” campaign. “We held such a campaign for the first time and we hope that it will become a tradition”, he said.

In Novodvinsk this year the work on the improvement of public areas continues within the national project “Housing and the urban environment”. By August 1st, a so-called pedestrian fountain will be installed in the Square near the “Druzhba” cinema, pedestrian paths in the Children's park behind the town cultural center are being repaired. A large amount of work is also planned to repair roads on Frontovykh Brigad Street, Melnikov Street and Kosmonavtov Street within the national project “Safe and high-quality roads”.

“A gift for all residents of Novodvinsk will be a large artificial spruce tree with a height of 10 meters, which will be installed in the Town Park on the bank of the Northern Dvina River on New Year's Eve”, said the head of the town Sergey Andreev, who took part in the “Garden of Remembrance” campaign.

According to experts, blue spruce trees along Melnikov Street are one of the best plants for urban greening: it takes root well, it is unpretentious and resistant to adverse environment. A common ash is a unique tree for Novodvinsk, since it doesn't grow anywhere else in the town.

“The garden on Melnikov Street in the full sense of the word can be seen in 30 to 50 years, but its outlines will already appear in 15 years. The ash trees planted in the second line behind the spruce trees will create a beautiful background”, said Alexander Antonov, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture and Artificial Forests of NARFU.

Specialists of the Arkhangelsk Pulp and Paper Mill will take care of planted trees.
