Sustainable consumption and careful attention to whether the purchased goods were produced with care for the environment or not are the impactful trends, without which it would be impossible to reduce debt to the planet. Ecolabeling can help with that: special labels applied to the goods will guide the buyer how carefully the manufacturer uses the planet's resources.

This year ecolabeling has become the main theme of the Earth Overshoot Day campaign which will be held under the slogan "Follow the labels: save the planet".

Learning to understand ecolabels is an essential skill for every responsible consumer today.

"There are labels that inform us about the fact that the manufacturer is trying to reduce its impact on marine ecosystems, others – that the product or its packaging is produced with care for forests. Still others inform that the production uses energy efficient technologies which means that less greenhouse gases are emitted to the atmosphere, etc. There are a great many ecolabels today. Unfortunately, among them there are those that only imitate care for nature," says Mikhail Babenko, Green Economy Programme director at WWF Russia.

To help everyone who has decided to take the path of sustainable consumption and gain insight into ecolabels, WWF Russia has developed a test. By answering questions, users will learn what ecolabels are, what information they contain, which labels should be trusted and which ones shouldn't. "Such knowledge is needed to develop useful ecohabits, that means to influence people's respectful behavior towards the planet and preserve its wealth for future generations,” emphasizes Mikhail Babenko. "Overconsumption is a serious problem in our world. Growing appetites of humanity lead to the fact that we need more land for agriculture, more water and energy. Consequently, we come to the soil depletion, desertification, and a decrease in the population of wild animals, including rare ones. Every year people give the planet less and less time to recover and bring Earth Overshoot Day closer."

Earth Overshoot Day comes when the resources that the planet is able to recreate in a year run out and we begin to live in debt by using natural goods on credit. This means living on borrowed from the planet and future generations. Global Footprint Network (GFN) calculates the date for Earth overshoot Day. The GFN experts compare the rate of humanity's biological resources consumption (ecological footprint) with the planet's ability to regenerate. The earlier Earth Overshoot Day comes, the more people owe to the planet, and vice versa, the later this date comes, the less the credit is.

Despite the fact that Earth Overshoot Day this year has been significantly rescheduled for a later date, the debt to the nature will not decrease. The pandemic is a forced measure to reduce consumption, which will not lead to sustainable results, but will only exacerbate the issue. Moreover, the economic crisis that has become a consequence of the pandemic could cause a number of environmental benefits for industrial, mining and transport companies.
